Meet our Employees
The beauty of en world is that you can work in a way
that allows you to tap into your own individuality.
Riko Yano
Joined en world in 2023 from a different industry with a desire to build long-term individual relationships and create proposals with a wide range of options while staying close to clients. She works as a recruiting consultant in the BtoC Sales and Marketing department, where she draws on her own strengths and personality.
- What are your current tasks and duties?
I am a member of the BtoC team where I work as a recruiting consultant supporting BtoC clients’ recruitment activities. Our BtoC market clients include major foreign cosmetics manufacturers and companies dealing in furniture and luxury merchandise. I have some experience from my time studying abroad, so I tend to work with foreign-affiliated clients more often than Japanese-affiliated clients.
- When did you join en world, and why?
I joined en world in 2023, so this is my second year with the company. This is my third year working.
I originally worked as a human resources consultant (in recruitment) for a startup in a different industry. At first I found it rewarding to talk to candidates during interviews and persuade them to join the company, but gradually I began to feel that I wanted to work more closely with each candidate, taking into account the needs of clients and positions that would allow candidates to best utilize their talents.
At the time, as a recruiter I was working with recruiters from 15 different recruitment agencies. Of those agencies, I was most attracted to the personalities of the people at en world. In my interactions with en world’s consultant, they listened carefully to me and understood the company’s situation, and I thought to myself, “you’ve thought this through and introduced me to the right people for the job.” Because of this experience, I began looking for new job, and I thought, “If I were to change jobs, en world’s company culture would be a good fit for me,” and I was fortunate enough to join en world.
- Are there experiences from your previous position that you still use today?
I used the questioning and listening skills I developed at my previous job to good use at en world. In my previous job as a recruiter at a consulting firm, my interview style was to dig deep and analyze “why” in response to a candidate’s abstract responses. When I meet with candidatea and client companies in my current job, I also utilize the technique of listening to what they have to say and making the abstract definite.
On the other hand, since it is the client company that ultimately decides whether to accept or reject a candidate, I find it can be difficult to conduct interviews while considering where to probe in depth. I am therefore conscious of the fact that I can talk to both candidates and client companies on an honest basis.
For example, some candidates are nervous, but since I have always been interested in people and like to talk to them, I try to get them to relax in order to gain their trust. First, I lay the groundwork for them to tell me what they really think, and I listen carefully to what they have to say. “Are there perhaps other reasons besides the one you gave for wanting to change jobs?” and so on. By digging deeper, I can find out their true feelings. We do not unilaterally send resumes to client companies, instead we make a point of meeting with them face to face and ask them for information that can’t be found in job postings alone.
- What do you keep in mind in your work?
First of all, I try not to be overly conscious of the fact that it is my job, and always try to enjoy what I’m doing. Work is a big part of your day, so it would be a waste not to enjoy it. Our expertise as recruiting consultants is of course important, but what is also important in our work is the one-on-one encounters we have with our clients. Therefore, even in a single meeting, I try to enjoy the conversation and take an interest in others who do different work than I do.
I also try to be honest with the people I work with. I am not the final decision maker in the hiring process; my job is to prepare both the client company and the candidate to make the final decision. My motto is to be honest with the other party and do everything I can until they say, “There’s nothing more I can do”.
And when I prepare for these meetings, I ask myself, “what kind of person are they?” I think it is important to be interested in and ready for the other party. In particular, I try to find connections between myself and the information provided in the resumes that I receive in advance and in databases. As we talk about the commonalities I have found, I share a bit about myself and move the conversation forward to get to know the other person better and to understand what they hope to achieve.
- What do you think is attractive about en world?
I feel comfortable and attracted to an environment where personality is emphasized in the way that we work and engage with team members, and where diversity and discretion in work styles are respected.
I think the managers allow us a certain degree of freedom while working within a framework. Our policy is to define what needs to be done, and then say, “how you approach this is up to you.” They respect my opinion by asking “what do you want to do?”, “what do you think?”, and then they give advice.
There’s also an internal team chat where you can ask questions like “what should I do for this kind of candidates who wants to change jobs?”, and you’ll get an immediate response like “oh there’s such and such a case you can refer to.” It’s an environment where people are receptive to your concerns. It’s an open environment, so you don’t have to worry about it alone. I love my current team. I truly feel there’s more work I want to do here.
- Tell us about what you find most rewarding about working at en world, your growth, and your outlook for the future.
I’m currently exploring my future career path. Some of the people around me are looking to specialize in management and become managers, while others are looking to hone their skills as specialists. To be honest, I still don’t know which one I myself am best suited for.
However, what I have felt during the past year of working at en world is that I want to help make en world more vibrant through interviews, graduate events, and so on. I think that en world is ultimately a good company, so I hope to get to know it better, and share what I feel are its good qualities outside the company.
As for my career as a consultant, I first want to learn a bit more about the company’s culture and activities and then take on some challenges. The BtoC team does away with the “because I’m a manager” or “because I’m a senior consultant” framework; everyone there has their own strengths. I want to learn from other members who have strengths that I don’t have, and I want to acquire skills that will give me an edge in my work.
- Finally, do you have a message for those who are thinking of changing jobs from a different industry?
en world has a strong culture of using teamwork to achieve its goals. For example, we are not only trying to achieve our own goals. We also have a mutual recognition of the goals of other members and the team. So, everyone’s working towards success and thinking “This is how I’m going to achieve my goal, what about the other members?” It’s not exactly a Marvel Avengers movie, but even though everyone has totally different characters, we’re all aiming for the same goal. I’m not a numbers person, nor a native English speaker, nor had I previously studied sales and marketing in depth professionally, so I didn’t think I had any clear strengths.
Not only was I uncertain about my career path, but I also had no idea what kind of industry I should work in. Nevertheless, I thought, “I would like to work in a way that allows me to use my personality, my interest in people, my friendliness, and my positive attitude.”
At en world, anything can give you an advantage. My positive personality, which I wanted to use in my work, is a great advantage at en world. If you have even one thing that you think could give you an edge, then en world has an environment where you can make use of it. Together we can find your own, unique edge!
